Participants of the Funky Costume Corps and Dance Party had plenty to dance about! After a successful last minute blitz of fund raising that saved the event, the Funk Parade was confirmed to celebrate its fifth year. The Funky Costume Corps was ready to go within three weeks! On May 12, music acts performed at various parts of the U Street Corridor and, despite the heat, the sidewalks were filled with spectators. The day cumulated with a parade that started at Howard Theater on T Street NW, wound through the neighborhood, and barreled down U Street.

The Funky Costume Corps (in its second year since forming) invited everyone to join in. By the time the parade reached its end, a dance party was in full swing with David the Oh leading the group dressed as “Shonuff” from The Last Dragon. Hoop Movement Artist Zbu performed as a colorful, hoop twirling majorette, and Jamal Harris served as the mobile DJ. Hula hoops, shiny Mylar capes, and balloons were passed out to the crowd, donated by Events by David Rosa, Lalalu Mexican Art, and Courtney Dowe. Enelay Creative served as the Funky Costume Corps co-promoter and photographer.

Thank you to all those who walked the parade route in funkified unity!! A special shout out goes out to our friend Fred Holt, representing cosplayers as Marvel’s Directory Fury!
